A magic carpet ride…

With the holiday buying season upon us, it’s a good time to reflect on how new purchases are introduced into the home. Of course and as an example, the obvious route for those that take part in Christmas is the December 25th wrapped present.

There are other ways to introduce items into a home and ‘Love of My Life’ (LOML) has  created a bit of a tradition on introducing big ticket items. An example of a big ticket item is…oh…let’s say…a Persian carpet.

This particular Persian carpet is incredibly soft to the touch and tough as nails. The craftsmanship is superb and it’s authenticity is confirmed with the odd ‘Persian flaw’.     It’s also green. Not any green mind you – more of a cross between an unripe bosc pear and chartreuse. That is, expensive green.

I was first introduced to ‘carpet’ some time ago when I was getting some work done in the basement. I think I was working on changing over clothes and was moving boxes in and out of storage, a seasonal transfer of sorts. As I went into one of the spare bedrooms, there it was – carpet. Not entirely on the floor rather, laying half on the bed and half on the ground. It seemed that carpet didn’t know what to do or where it belonged. Poor thing :-(

LOML knew I was going to be working in the basement and was hoping that I would discover this new member of the family and welcome it with open arms. I didn’t say a thing and just went about my business of the day.

This type of activity continued for some time with LOML arranging ‘carpet’ in various poses and throughout different rooms in our home – a little like a catalogue photo shoot. There was no way you could miss these dramatic cascades. They were beautiful arrangements and, still, I said not a word. Days passed. My silence continued as the carpet made its way around the house although I was always very interested in and entertained by where I would see it next.

I was testing LOML’s patience. She wanted to fully adopt the little fellow and I was not cooperating. Then it came.

“Have you noticed anything different about the house lately?”

“Nope.” I teased.

She knew I was pulling her leg. It’s just that she wanted me to name that which shall not be named. We shared a laugh and ‘carpet’ is now comfortably at home in our home.

Post Script 1: The power of the Force is strong within me. I was once driving with a friend when I had a overwhelming feeling come over me. I said that LOML was making a big purchase and that I should call to find out what was going on. I called her on her mobile and she confirmed that she was, in fact, in line to pay for an extraordinary purchase at Pottery Barn.

Post Script 2: While the power of the Force is strong within me, I am not yet fully a Master Jedi in the sense that I could not stop said purchase at Pottery Barn. Oh well :-)
